Our Beliefs
What is a Christian?A Christian is someone who believes that God has shown himself in Jesus Christ, who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who lives in relationship with God, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, and who takes his/her part in the life of Christ's church. (Taken from The Senior Catechism of The Methodist Church.) John chapter 3 verse 16:
(Jesus said) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
God made every person, and has a purpose for each and every person he has made. God loves every person and he longs for each one to return his love - to be in a secure loving relationship with him. But all of us have made mistakes and have let ourselves down, let other people down and let God down. The Bible calls this situation sinand sin spoils our relationship with God. However, Jesus died on the cross in order to take away this "sin" so that people may be forgiven and enter freely into a secure loving relationship with God (Jesus called this relationship "eternal life"). We cannot earn this relationship with God - it is a free gift to anyone and everyone who accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord. God invites each person to respond to his love in Jesus Christ. However, he has given us free will, and therefore we are free to refuse God's generous gift of eternal life. Meanwhile, the invitation still stands!
